Camp Cooking Recipes

Can I cook foil-wrapped food in an actual fire or does it have to be coals?

I’ve been reading up on great Camping Recipes in which you can cook conveniently in foil. However, what would be even MORE convenient would be if I could skip the coals altogether and just cook right in the fire. I want to bring as small a load as possible on this trip. But all the recipes I see say “cook over hot coals.” Well….anyone had any luck in the actual fire?

To be honest, cooking in the fire is a bad idea. With something like a campfire, this will give you very uneven cooking. Even when I was a kid and tried to cook a hot dog in the campfire, naturally I wanted to go straight for the flame. I always had blistered and blackened dogs that were cold inside. Definitely just be patient and wait to get some good coals. Your food will be much better and safer to eat.

Reading this again, sorry if I am misunderstanding but your campfire will create the coals. If you build the fire before you need to cook (like a few hours) your wood will burn down and create the coals. You don’t need to bring anything extra.
