Campfire Cook

campfire cook
What procedure should I use to build a campfire to cook on? What do I need to take with me?

I have a couple cast iron skillets, a box of water proof matches, some lighter fluid, and some canned beans, macaroni and such…what else do I need to take?

Number one: Have two or three 5 gallon (or the equivilant) buckets of water on hand before you ever stike the match, flick your bic or in any manner, produce any flame.

When it comes to a cooking fire, (any fire, in my opinion) less is better. Skip the lighter fluid. It is dangerous, extraneous, not necessary, and gives off a bad chemical taste to your food.

Instead, think of the stages of fire. Fine kindling: like dryer lint, the inside layer of bark, shaved bark, shaved twigs, etc.
First catch fuel: like pencil lead size twigs, twisted paper, wood chips. Secondary catch fuel: pencil sized twigs. Third catch fuel: Wrist size wood. And finally, when each of the previous fuels has ignited the next larger size, add your logs or charcoal briquettes. The briquettes are easier to cook with because you can better regulate the heat by spreading them out, pushing them together, adding or removing briquettes. Be sure to bring sturdy tongs and an oven mit for handling the ingnited fuel. A couple of wet, level, larger pieces of wood arranged around the fire for your skillets to rest on are very helpful. Watch them so you can deal with them if they catch fire.

Your fire starter stages can be arranged teepee style with the lightest stuff in the center, adding each successive layer in a cone like configuration, or raft style with the lightest stuff on the bottom and each successive layer crisscrossed on top, with open spaces between the pieces in the layer for a good draft. Draft is where oxygen is drawn in at the bottom of the fire and the smoke and heat goes out the top. If you pack the layers too tightly with either style, you will smother the fire.

The waterproof matches are always a must have, but I also like to carry one of those inexpensive butane flames. It gets the fire into the middle of the configuration without burning your fingers, cuffs, etc. Also, be careful of hair and clothing hanging over the fire when you are adding layers, or more wood or briquettes. Sounds elementary, I know, but even I have reached over when something so carefully placed starts to slip and drawn back with a singed curl or two, and I have been at this for quite awhile.

Of course, you can also carry one of those match light charcoals, where you simply light a corner of the bag and the coals are ready in ten minutes.

You always need plenty of drinking water. If safe water is not available at the site, carry it with you. You don’t say how far you will need to go or in what type of setting you will be building your fire. If the weight of water is a problem because of the distance you will be walking, carry the purifier tablets and or a hiker style water purifier.

As to food, the carb style body fuels you mention are good choices. If possible add some fresh fruit (apples, grapes, oranges all pack well), raisins, avacados, dried apples, nuts, dried pineapple, are all good travelers and help round out a simple meal with some chewiness, flavor and nutrition.

Hope this has been helpful.
